Microsoft announced Xbox Game Pass on Tuesday, a new service that gives fans free and unrestricted access to an assortment of Xbox games. Microsoft also announced plans for a launching the new Netflix-like service for gamers, letting people play as many as they want for just $10 a month.
Microsoft is moving into the world of Netflix-style game subscriptions with Xbox Game Pass, a monthly service coming this spring that will give you a selection of games you can download and play on your Xbox.
Xbox Game Pass service works like this, pay $10 dollars a month, and you can play any of over 100 Xbox One and Xbox 360 games. The Xbox Games Pass will be a monthly subscription service that gives access to 100 games, Microsoft has said. The Game Pass program is set to launch this spring after a few months of testing.
The full list of those launch titles hasn’t yet been revealed, but Microsoft has indicated that some of the biggest games and publishers will be part of the arrangement. The list will constantly change, with some games entering and exiting the pool over time. Microsoft didn’t include a full list of games, but including recent big hits such as “Halo 5 Guardians” – “NBA 2K16” – “ Payday 2” – ” SoulCalibur II “.
Xbox Game Pass will feature a rotating selection of new games (like Netflix and other subscription services). Publishers in the mix for Xbox Game Pass include 2K, 505 Games, Bandai Namco Entertainment, Capcom, Code masters, Deep Silver, Focus Home Interactive, Sega, SNK, THQ Nordic GmbH, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Microsoft Studios.
“One of the best things about Xbox Game Pass and A key difference from other subscription services like NVidia’s GeForce is that. Users can download the full titles directly on your Xbox One, the official post states. That means you don’t have to worry about things like streaming, or bandwidth issues. You also have the option to actually buy the games permanently at an “exclusive discount”. Every month new games will cycle into the subscription with some cycling out, giving you a constantly updating library of games.”
it’s not totally clear whether you have to download every game you want to play. Having a streaming option is still convenient for when you simply want to try a game you’re not sure you’re interested in, or simply don’t want to use up your Xbox’s storage.
“Xbox Game Pass will only be available on Xbox One and Windows 10 devices,” Microsoft stated. “While some Xbox 360 backwards compatible games will be included in Xbox Game Pass, those titles will not be available on the Xbox 360 console via your subscription.”
“We simply do not have confidence that [GameStop] or anyone can accurately forecast console market growth in 2017 and beyond,” Ben Schechter of Macquarie Capital said in a January note to investors. “We remain open to the potential for [GameStop] to rebound on a faster than expected shift to new businesses and business models, but given management’s recent track record and our own uncertainty around forecasting core console gaming, we simply want to see better execution before we can recommend the stock.”
“Every month new games will cycle into the subscription with some cycling out, giving you a constantly-updating library of games,” Microsoft’s Xbox chief Phil Spencer, wrote in a blog post announcing the service. “Xbox Game Pass is your ticket to endless play.”
Xbox Games Pass will initially roll out to Xbox Insiders, the small group of people who try out software and services before they are released to the public. It will make it available to the public later this spring, Microsoft said. In addition, Xbox Live Gold members will be receiving exclusive access to Xbox Game Pass prior to the program launching broadly.
